It was a fun day out for babies and families at the annual ‘Healthy Baby Contest and Exhibition’, Dubai’s largest family fun event held at Thumbay Hospital, Dubai on Friday, 26^th February 2016. This year’s event saw the participation of more than 500 kids and close to 4000 visitors.

Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, Provost Gulf Medical University was the Guest of Honor of the event. Mr. Thumbay Moideen – Founder President of Thumbay Group, Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay – Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group, and several other important dignitaries were also present.

The ‘Healthy Baby’ was selected on the basis of the physical and mental growth, complete immunization, general appearance of the child, as well as the parents’ knowledge about childcare. More than 500 children, falling in five different age categories participated in the competition. The age categories were: 3 months to 1 year, 1 to 2 years, 2 to 3 years, 3 to 4 years and 4 to 5 years. There were also prizes for categories like Curly Hair, Sparkling Eyes, Sunshine Smile and Chubby Cheeks, in addition to the ‘Healthy Baby’ prizes for each of the five age groups. The contest was judges by renowned pediatricians as well as experts from Thumbay Hospitals.

There were several fun activities for kids, such as winter snow play area, creative craft stations, children’s train ride, bouncy castles, toddlers’ play area, magic show, musical parade, meet and greet the prince and the princess, etc. Kids also got the chance to show their dancing talent before the huge audience.

The ‘Healthy Baby Contest and Exhibition’ is an annual event intended to raise community awareness and to inculcate health and nutrition habits in children at an early age, for a healthy lifestyle. The contest promotes health consciousness among mothers regarding various factors affecting the health of children and detecting illness at early stages. The contest also provides parents the chance for a personal and friendly interaction with the renowned doctors of Thumbay Group’s hospitals. Judges speak to parents about parenting, growth-related issues of kids, immunization/vaccination etc.

“It is important for the parents to be aware of the child’s growth stages, and understanding his/her needs. We talk to parents and advise them on all these aspects as well as parenting. Parents need to know what is normal for their kids and what is not; they should be clear about when to worry,” said one of the contest judges. He added that this was especially important for first-time parents, who usually tend to be very anxious.

There was also an online voting photo contest for babies from 3 months to five years. Over 600 children participated in this category, and the top ten winners based on highest votes were given special prizes at the event. The raffle draw for the family air ticket to Paris held at the event was won by Dhashvath Gunasekaran.

Thumbay Group’s annual sports event for employees, Thumbay Group Olympics 2016 was held from 27^th February to 3^rd March 2016 at Thumbay Grounds and Body & Soul Health Club and Spa at the Gulf Medical University campus in Ajman. Over 1500 employees participated in the competitions held over six days which included badminton, basketball, table tennis, squash, volleyball, football, cricket, lawn tennis, 100 meters race, 4×100 meters relay race, tug of war, kabaddi, swimming and throw-ball.

The Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay distributed the prizes to the winners, at the closing ceremony. Addressing the participants, he congratulated them for their enthusiastic participation in the competitions. The Hospitality Division of Thumbay Group emerged the overall champions of Thumbay Group Olympics 2016, bagging the most prizes and defending the title they had won last year.  Mr. Farhad C, Director of the Hospitality Division received the Thumbay Group Olympics trophy from Mr. Akbar.

Thumbay Group Olympics 2016 was flagged off by Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, Provost Gulf Medical University on the opening day of the event. She also unveiled the championship trophy at the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony had a colorful parade by the participating teams. The participants in formation created the word “THUMBAY”, to mark the unity of the Group.

The students of Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, the leading private medical university in the UAE owned and run by Thumbay Group, marked World Kidney Day with a variety of programs on 9th March 2016. The event is the latest in the series of ‘World Health Days’ conducted by the 1st year MBBS students of GMU, as their academic mini-project.

The students conducted activities stressing the importance of following a healthy lifestyle and the need to have regular checkups. They played games to spread awareness on the importance of having healthy kidneys. The event was attended by the faculty members and students of GMU.

World Kidney Day (WKD) is an annual global awareness and education event, held on the second Thursday of March. Every year, several local, national and international events are organized by kidney charities, healthcare professionals, patient groups and individuals who want to make a difference.

Thumbay Medical & Dental Specialty Centre – Sharjah, a leading academic hospital owned and operated by Thumbay Group –UAE, organized a Health Checkup & Dental Screening Camp in association with Celina Trading Co. LLC – Sharjah from 9am to 1pm on Wednesday, 2^nd March 2016.

The camp, held at company’s premises, was organized as part of its ‘Healthy Employee Campaign’. Employees were given free health checkup by a General Physician and free consultation with a Dental Specialist from the hospital. They were also explained about the importance of hygiene and the need to follow a healthy lifestyle.

More than 120 employees of Celina Trading Co. benefited from the camp, according to Dr. Manish Singhal – Chief Operating Officer & Dr. Shaju – Assistant Administrative Director at Thumbay Medical & Dental Specialty Center. The company management thanked the hospital for conducting the camp and appreciated the efforts of Thumbay Group hospitals in raising health awareness. The hospital is involved in organizing regular health camps at various locations in Sharjah, to raise health awareness among the public.

Thumbay Hospital – Fujairah, the leading academic hospital owned and operated by Thumbay Group supported the 3km walkathon for taxi drivers conducted in Fujairah on Saturday, 5^th March 2016 . The walkathon was held as part of the Taxi Drivers Sports Day organized by Cars Taxi, and was the first such event focusing mainly on taxi drivers.

The hospital contributed to the efforts of the organizers as ‘Health Services Support Partner’ by providing medical checkups to more than 400 participant drivers, checking their vitals and conducting pre-walkathon fitness screening for all participants. In addition, they also provided first-aid & ambulance services throughout the event.

In addition, around 30 Thumbay Hospital staff formed a human chain to spread health awareness amongst the participants. They also cheered the walkathon participants. The management of Cars Taxi appreciated the support provided by Thumbay Hospital. The event also saw the presence of several esteemed dignitaries.

BITS Pilani, Dubai emerge overall champions in the Annual Sports Festival participated by around 2000 students from 27 leading universities and colleges

The 15^th Annual Sports Festival of Gulf Medical University (GMU), the leading private university in the region owned and operated by Thumbay Group UAE concluded with the prize distribution ceremony on Sunday, 13^th March 2016. The closing ceremony which was held at the GMU campus in Ajman was attended by GMU Provost Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, the Chief Guest of the ceremony, the Deans of the constituent colleges of GMU, the sports directors, officials and students from the participating institutions as well as GMU students.

The event, which is considered the biggest inter-university sports festival in the country, saw around 2000 participants from across 27 leading universities/colleges in the university vie for prizes in Cricket, Football, Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Tennis, Throwball, Volleyball, Squash and Swimming held over six days.

The festival was held from 5^th March in association with Body & Soul Health Club and Spa, the award-winning network of health clubs operated by the Hospitality Division of Thumbay Group. The grand sports event is held each year keeping in view the philosophy of Gulf Medical University “Healthy Body for a Healthy Mind” and to instill the spirit of sportsmanship and healthy competition among the students, according to Dr. Joshua Ashok, Dean – Student Affairs, who is also Chairman-Sports Committee of GMU. “We thank Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President & Chairman of the Board of Governors of GMU for his constant support to the annual sports festival,” he said. Gulf Medical University, the leading medical university in the region owned and operated by Thumbay Group celebrated its annual Global Day 2016 with pomp and splendor on Friday, 18^th March 2016. The event, held at the sprawling university grounds had around 3000 visitors including the university students and staff as well as their friends and relatives. Every year, GMU celebrates the Global Day, which provides the students a platform to show the essence of their ethnicity and cultures.

GMU Provost Prof. Gita Ashok Raj inaugurated the Global Day Celebrations, in the presence of the Deans of the colleges under GMU. Accompanied by the Deans, she toured the country pavilions. She appreciated the students for their talent and said that the Global Day was GMU’s way of bringing together students, faculty, staff and their families to celebrate ‘Unity in Diversity’. The venue was also visited by Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President and Chairman of the Board of Governors of GMU.

The GMU campus was gleaming with a variety of hues as the students, who hail from as many as 73 nationalities, were dressed in their respective traditional attires. Students also performed on stage, entertaining the audience with some great displays of talent.  Individual and combined country pavilions were set-up at the venue presenting their national heritage and treating visitors to some of their mouthwatering ethnic food.  Various competitions were held, such as selection of the best pavilion, food, hospitality, teamwork, country performances, as well as talent and fashion shows.

Prof. Gita Ashok Raj gave away the prizes to the competition winners. Prizes were also given to the raffle draw winners from among the audience present.  India and Nigeria students won the Overall Champions Prize.

The students of Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, the leading private medical university in the UAE owned and run by Thumbay Group, marked World Tuberculosis Day with a variety of programs on 20^th March 2016. The event is the latest in the series of ‘World Health Days’ conducted by the 1^st year MBBS students of GMU, as their academic mini-project.

The students conducted activities stressing the importance of safeguarding against tuberculosis. They played games to spread awareness on TB and also organized a question/answer session to learn more about the disease. They conducted presentations outlining the nature, causes, precautions and treatments of TB. The event was attended by the faculty members and students of GMU.

World TB Day, falling on the 24^th of March each year, is designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic and efforts to eliminate the disease. Tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of nearly one-and-a-half million people each year, mostly in developing countries.

Body & Soul Health Club and Spa, the award-winning network of health clubs operated by the Hospitality Division of Thumbay Group – UAE organized the Annual Fun Run 2016 from 6:30 am on Friday, 25^th March at the Body & Soul Health Club & Spa in the GMU campus in Al Jurf, Ajman.

The Fun Run was conducted as part of Body & Soul’s endeavors to promote healthy lifestyles among the residents of the UAE and to stress the message of staying fit, among people of all age groups. The race was flagged off by Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, Provost of Gulf Medical University (GMU), the chief guest of the event.

Races were held in the following categories: Individual (men/women), Kids, Corporate/Group and Special Needs Runners. Prizes included cash awards, trophies and certificates. The total value of cash prizes distributed was more than Dhs.10,000. Raffle draw prizes and certificates of participation were also given away, in addition to free Fun Run t-shirts to all participants. Around 1000 people registered for the event. Besides the regular races, various fun activities such as Aerobics and Fitness Demonstrations were also conducted.

The Fun Run was held under the watchful eyes of Ajman Police, who patrolled the race route. Mr. Farhad C., Director of the Hospitality Division of Thumbay Group felicitated Ajman Police by awarding mementos, certificates and medals to all the patrolling officers.

The event was supported by the General Authority of Youth & Sports Welfare – UAE, Ajman Police and the UAE Sports for All  Committee. Thumbay Clinic, KEF Holdings and Vitabiotics Wellman were the sponsors. Certificates of appreciation were awarded to representatives of the event supporters and sponsors.
